Need cancer knowledge? Listen to Joni Aldrich on internet radio.

This week on the All Women’s Radio Network, Joni Aldrich talks about cancer, stress, and sexuality.

Tuesday, December 20th, Diagnosis S.O.S.

Ladies, Paget’s disease is a rare form of breast cancer which presents itself with red scaly patches of skin on the nipple and sometimes with a dark area of skin, or crusting, bleeding, or ulceration with a discharge from the nipple. It is often confused with other skin conditions, such as eczema, dermatitis or psoriasis. My guest is Dr. Linnea Chap,
Hematology/Oncology Clinical Associate Professor at UCLA School of Medicine. She is a highly respected specialist in breast cancer and gynecologic malignancies.

 Wednesday, December 21st, Caregiving S.O.S.

“Stress causes nothing, but aggravates everything.” What happens when extreme stress is compounded on top of other stresses (a.k.a. for a caregiver!)? Join us as we discuss the Social Readjustment Rating Scale which was developed at the University of Washington School of Medicine. The scale was based on the theory that good and bad events in a person’s life can increase stress levels, and make people more susceptible to illness and mental health problems. My guest is Dr. Dale Peterson, author of Building Health by Design: Adding Life to Your Years and Years to Your Life.

Thursday, December 22nd, Treatment S.O.S.

This week we’ll discuss healthy sexual relationships between a cancer patient and their spouse. It’s important to maintain an intimate relationship during treatment, but it has to be done in a healthy way for both partners. Can cancer be “caught” through intercourse? Can chemotherapy be transferred through sexual relations? We’ll find out from my guest Melissa Donahue, MSW, LCSW, OSW-C, CST, the New Jersey Society for Clinical Social Workers sex therapist with expertise in sexuality and cancer.

Friday, December 23rd, Ladies Who Inspire

My inspirational guest will be my good friend and assistant pastor, Dr. Rev. Anne Sims from the beautiful Ann Street United Methodist Church. Located in the historic district of downtown Beaufort, N.C. (my hometown), the congregation is full of loving and caring people with a mission to know Christ on a personal level and to make Him known to the world. The pastors and congregation were so important to my family this year when we lost our dear mother in February from lung cancer. Dr. Sims (to one and all known as Anne) will be my very special inspiration for this pre-Christmas Eve show. Anne, YOU INSPIRE ME!

As always, I can’t express in mere words how much the support that I receive from each of you has meant to me. May God bless your family with a happy and healthy holiday season and all of the best in 2012!

What comes first: Website or the marketing message?

Hey solo-pros!
Do you need a website? Yes.
Do you need words on the page? Yes.
So…what comes first?

The answer? Not as easy as you think.

But it’s what Susan Rich and Jocelyn Mozak talked about on Get Noticed Now, a weekly internet radio show. Jocelyn is queen of WordPress coding and Susan is a marketing expert and copywriter. So the conversation went back and forth, just like the age-old question – chicken or egg?

It started like this:

  • If you’re a new business owner, you need a website: Something to tell people who you are, what you do, how you can help.
  • It doesn’t have to cost much. Intrepid business owners can pick a WordPress theme and set up the site themselves.
  • Turning the site live is important, don’t get too hung up on perfection. The idea is to tell people you’re out there.

Agreed.

A few minutes later:

  • If you’re a new business owner, you need a message. You need to articulate first, who you are, what you do, how you help. If you can’t answer those questions, you’re not ready for a website.
  • A website is an online brochure – so if you can’t clearly express your message, don’t make the investment.
  • Developing a website takes a team – for a quality product it’s not something you should tackle on your own. Consider working with a graphic designer (for the logo, colors) a website designer (page design, look and feel), a copywriter (key words, SEO and stellar writing are what sells) and a website developer (the coding pro who makes it all work).

Agreed.

So what’s the right answer?

There isn’t one.

It depends greatly on you, new business owner. The more you understand those key value questions: who you are, what you do, how you help, the better job you do articulating them online.

The challenge here is that even if you think you know the answers, it’s always changing. What you decide today is different quarter by quarter. And that’s ok. The idea is to settle on a message platform, one you can live with, one you can grow into, and then launch the site.
There are only so many pennies to go around, Joceylyn says, so make the investment that matches your budget.

Also – think big. To your best ability, create a website that represents who you want to be in 3-5 years, not who you are today.
Design imparts value, so the better you look, the more people respect who you are.

(That’s why $700 handbags continue to sell.)

Failure to launch

Don’t let fear stop you. If you’re afraid of launching too soon, of going live before you have all your ducks in a row, that’s just an excuse to stall.
It’s never a mistake to have a website – you just want to adjust the timing so that it works for you.

Here’s where fear of failure kicks in: People think that the site must be letter-perfect before they turn it live. But it can’t be – the message that you set today might change with your first sale. The competitive climate will change. Who you want to sell to might change. All of that is part of messaging, part of answering those value questions. And value answers change because people change. You change. The world changes.

The website is never perfect, it’s never done. There’s never an end-to-the road, Jocelyn says. Unless you die, sell your business, or run off to Maui, Susan adds.

There’s always something more to do and one more improvement to make. Don’t let perfection drag you to a halt. Launch the site. Live with it. Think about it.

One day you’ll discover a new way of thinking about your business, your clients, yourself…

…and that chicken and egg question will roll again.

Guerrilla Green: Get-noticed-now marketing tips from Shel Horowitz

He’s the ultimate champion in Get-Noticed strategies.

And that’s not an idle claim. In the last year Shel Horowitz, copywriter, marketing consultant, author and public speaker, was cited or quoted in more than 131 of our nation’s leading publications.

How he reached this level of success — and how others can do the same — was the subject of Get Noticed Now, an internet radio show hosted by Susan Rich.

First, Shel explains, you have to connect with reporters; find out what they are writing about. You do this by following the following websites:

Help a Reporter Out

Reporter Connection

Pitch Rate

Radio Guest List

Next, write a brief pitch: Explain who you are, why you are an expert, what information you can share with readers. Stay on topic – only address what the reporter is looking for. Include a few quotes. That increases the chance that the reporter will skip the interview and quote you directly in the article. It’s a time-saving trick that works out great for both of you.

Be responsive, build a relationship: Reporters work on deadline. If you answer a query, be sure you are available to take the call. That doesn’t mean you have to strap yourself to the computer, forgo meals and cancel client meetings. It does mean check your email at least every two hours. Pitching and then going dark is frustrating to the reporter — you might not get a second chance to build that oh-so-important relationship. More so than traditional networking, making friends with the media is pure gold. These are the people who can keep you top-of-mind with your clients, just by mentioning you in an article.

2 other get-noticed strategies:

1.  Form alliances: Connect with other businesses — sometimes competitors — to give your business a shot of visibility. Link to a cause, or a project, and you have the ability to double attention and increase response.

2. Go green: Shel co-authored Guerrilla Marketing Goes Green with with Jay Conrad Levinson. In addition to tips that help you green your office, there are dozens of ideas that help you connect with green business owners. The book is an excellent resource even if your business is not focused on the “green community.”

It was a great show and you can ask me for an audio file if you missed it.

Public Speaking: Talk and top your niche

Quick! Show of hands –

Who is afraid of public speaking?

It’s a common fear: Some studies show people would rather DIE than stand in front of a crowd and deliver a talk. And yet public speaking…or teaching…or leading a workshop and seminar about YOUR area of expertise, is the most effective, powerful way to draw customers to you.

That’s what Susan Rich and Michael Neuendorff discussed on the internet radio show Get Noticed Now! Michael is The Growth Coach and Susan is a Get-noticed-NOW marketing expert. Both used to be terrified of public speaking – so they can address that particular fear and why it’s important to lay it to rest.

“Your competition probably isn’t giving workshops or seminars,” Michael points out. “So get ahead of them by getting out there first.”

Think of public speaking as an extended elevator pitch. Susan says, “A 30-minute commercial allows you to tell the audience why you — how you solve a problem in a way that no one else can.”

Succeeding in business

When you’re working for yourself, it’s already a case of overload. If you decide to work with a business coach, you’ll get plenty of advice — and homework. It’s this extra burden that Michael tries to avoid when he works with clients. Too much to do, on top of too much to do, means something won’t get done, he notes.

Here’s his simple strategy for getting organized and noticed:

  1. Know who your target is – who is your product for? You can have multiple audiences, just be sure to clearly describe each one.
  2. Know how to reach your target – where do they hang out? How do you find them? 3 steps here: Online (social media) Offline (traditional methods) Networking (and public speaking!) Use social media judiciously he says: “I want my clients to believe they are worth $100/hour. That means the time they spend online is also worth $100/hour.” This doesn’t mean don’t use social media, it just means use the tool that best connects you with your market first, then branch out.
  3. Know how to sell to people. Yep, it comes down to our ability to sell, sell, sell. You might need to take a course, read a book…or give a talk.
The more you talk about the benefits of  “why you” the easier that translates into a sales conversation, Susan adds. Asking people for their business is hard to do. Demonstrate value, and you’re halfway there. Plus, c’mon, folks expect to be sold to. You’re not surprising them when you try.
  4. Plan. Plan. Plan. Yes, this is the big homework project, but if you’re going to succeed, you’ve got to plan. And the plan needs to be a living document, something you re-visit, Michael notes. Otherwise “you drift away” from the goals you set for yourself. Don’t let PLAN become a 4-letter word. Break it down into small strategic steps, then execute each one. “Be relentless,” is Michael’s advice.

Michael was joined by Nillie Goldman on this week’s show, Get Noticed Now. This is the where we tell you how to grab attention and drive sales — how to maximize your marketing efforts or use technology to become more productive.
