Culinate Hosts Benefit Dinner to Support School Gardens and Nutrition
Education in Portland Schools

Join noted author and chef Deborah Madison for an evening of local flavors
and conversation

PORTLAND, Ore., October 18, 2007 – Join Deborah Madison for a benefit dinner that
blends family-style dining with the opportunity to discuss supporting school gardens
and nutrition education in the Portland Public Schools. “Feeding our minds, our bodies,
and our children” is the theme of the “Local Flavors” dinner that takes place 7 p.m.
Saturday December 1, at the University of Portland’s “Terrace Room.”

Hosted by online food magazine Culinate (www.culinate.com), in association with Slow
Food Portland, the evening’s menu will be supplied by local chefs Cathy Whims
(Nostrana), Piper Davies (Grand Central Bakery), and others, including local wineries
and producers.

“This dinner will reinforce the positive impact that school gardens and education can
have on food awareness and health choices – not only for our children, but for our
community as a whole,” explains Kim Carlson, title?.

All the evening’s proceeds will go to Slow Food’s “Slow Food in Schools” (www.
slowfoodusa.org) to help fund dedicated school garden education programs in Portland
Public Schools. In addition, a silent auction, featuring garden tools and supplies, signed
copies of cookbooks, gifts from local artists and restaurants, will be held.

As the evening’s host, Madison, a long-time advocate of the local food movement, will
lead a round-table discussion on local and sustainable food awareness and choices.
Other guests include Anthony Boutard, from Ayers Creek Farm, and Paul Johnson,
author of Fish Forever, and founder of the Monterey Fish Market in San Francisco.

“Culinate supports school gardens because we think connecting children with their food
makes good sense and has the potential to teach them – not just that they can have a
garden of their own – but about the how there is a connection between the food they
grow with the food they eat,” Carlson says.

“Deborah’s ability to draw attention to the connections between food and other part’s
of people’s lives is why we are pleased to have her as our moderator at this event,” she
adds.

Event Location Details: 7 p.m. Saturday, December 1, 2007 at the Terrace Room,
University of Portland
Ticket Price: $100. Order online, or make a tax-deductible donation at www.
