Lela Davidson joins Susan Rich Talks…Living the Writing Life

Are you Blacklisted from the PTA?

Lela Davidson, authorMaybe you should try — it worked for author Lela Davidson. Her first novel skewers suburban living in a series of short essays. From fantasy tweeting while in labor to having “the talk” with her son, each story is a quick read, perfect for busy moms – or anyone who has ever lived in a planned community.

For most writers, the journey from private to published writer is one that fascinates, and Lela shared her own how-to story with Susan Rich and Annemarie Schuetz on Living the Writing Life.

Lela’s drive to write, coupled with her sharp wit, allowed this former CPA to slowly build a reputation as a humorist. Some of her credits include the TODAY Show Mom Blog and Chicken Soup for the Soul: New Moms.

Lela is currently at work on her next novel.

Writing Prompt

We have a weekly writing prompt for prizes. This week’s give-away is a copy of Lela Davidson’s book, Blacklisted by the PTA.

How it works: Post a 100-word response in the blog comments on this post. Keep it to PG, no erotica or foul language, please. Challenge yourself: Authors, write some sales copy; copy-writers, turn your hand at fiction.

Here’s the prompt: Write about a song you love.

Congratulations to last week’s winner: Vicki Jo Indrizzo-Valente for her response to, “You didn’t have to do that,” she said. Vicki will get the PDF file of my book, Write it Rich! Tips for Reluctant Writers.

Here are her words:
Within the doorway of her room approached a familiar shadow with the overpowering stench of the local corner hangout. Jimmy had come in a little later than his normal 1:00 a.m., slurring words to never again call his cell when he’s out. His loudness caused little James to whimper in the next room. As she fidgeted with the phone in her hand, Dorothy backed up against the dresser and suddenly, Jimmy threw back his arm impounding his physical strength across her face as she felt the stinging pain she knew so often. Jimmy, you didn’t have to do that, she said.

Did you miss the show?

  1. Susan Rich says:

Studying him from the second riser wasn’t close enough for me today, so I walked back downstairs. Placing my hands on the collage, framing his photo in the spread of my hands, I leaned closer. Still, after all these years, just looking at him made my heart ache, my palms sweat.

The chorus from a Pam Tillis song raced through my mind:
I can feel a strange expression on my face/
I can feel a new sensation taking place/
I hear the guitars playing lovely tunes/
Every time that you walk in the room

  3. Tap. . . Tap. . . Tap. . . the silence of the march fell upon the frail woman as the soldiers approached. Please, Madam, accept your son’s purple heart with our condolences . Angelique grasped the offering of the Purple Heart without fully absorbing the Lieutenant’s sullen words as numbness enveloped her soul. Her heart ached and she knew the only way to get through this moment was to repeat over and over, just smile, although your heart is aching, when there are clouds in the sky, you’ll get by . . . if you just smile.
